What I had planned was a long, meandering piece about how much I love traveling and how my dream job would be to have people pay me to go places and just sit in coffee shops, watch the world go by, and write about it.1 But rather than actually write that, I got back from the trip an promptly got caught in a whirlwind of stuff2 and now it’s the last day of February.
Rather than go back and try to remember what the heck I had in mind,3 I will go forward with some links:
If you aren’t reading Go Fug Yourself, you are missing out on some quality writing about pop culture. For instance, in a recent newsletter of their, the Fug Girls called The Traitors “The Eurovision of reality shows” and truer words have not been typed.4
You really need to watch John Oliver on Hot Ones. It is both ridiculous and sublime.
Decoding the message has only deepened the mystery.
“A hearty breakfast calls for a light, slippery lunch courtesy of one of the toughest presidents the country has ever seen.”
The money quote from this piece about Portland’s7 ever deepening drug/homelessness crisis:
“Mendenhall said people are pointing at Measure 110 and saying it's the reason for Oregon's problems, "when in reality it is our decades-long, underbuilt system of behavioral health, substance use disorders, shelter and affordable housing – that are the primary drivers.""
We’ve really got to start getting our arms around this problem as a society. We’ve also got to remember that it didn’t start with the pandemic. The pandemic just made all of the cracks in the already inadequate system wider and deeper. There is no one answer, mind, but what we’re doing is not working.
As I get further into The Power Broker,8 the more I realize that Long Island has kind of always been hella racist. But maybe that’ll improve?
Related to the above: how has Belle Moskwitz not had more written about her? She was a total badass and knew how to get shit done.9
Also from NPR: I find this story about a nine-month cruise and TikTok absolutely bonkers. What a time to be alive.
Supplements won’t get you where you want to go. What will get you there is the boring stuff like sleep, nutrition, and training. So it’s both good news and bad news, you know?
Also running related: one of the current board members of Western States’ Endurance Run is an Allegheny grad. We are slowly taking over the world.
You should watch Mrs Davis. I promise you that it is worth being confused for the first two episodes. Once you understand this world, the result is magic.10
See … my husband and I had just gotten back from a trip to Ireland in mid-January, which already feels like a million years ago…
Like this bit of stuff, which really deserves its own post once I figured how the regulations on such things work
I know there would have been something about visiting a linen museum in Belfast and being completely unable to get William Bloat (it’s a song (click the link)) out of my head.
They also captured a quote from Alan Cumming about his hosting gig: “He described his performance as him playing Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek playing Alan Cumming” and *chef’s kiss*
not for nothing, but if I were 20 years younger, I’d totally apply for this gig. Maybe I could be a mother of the bride for hire?
I DO NOT NEED ANYMORE RACE SHIRTS.
the West Coast one
She would likely wash my mouth out with soap for describing her thusly.
I want Betty Gilpin in everything. More Betty, more better.
Traitors is our guilty indulgence. Alan is the best host but the Australian version of the show is the best of all of them (US, UK and Aussie)
